Gender reveal parties are a fairly new trend started by those darn millennials where a couple hosts a party with friends and family to reveal the gender of their baby. The party normally involves guests deciding if they’re team boy or team girl and the couple revealing the gender through sweet treats, confetti cannons or silly string. There’s been plenty of opinions on the pros and cons of having gender reveal parties but since I was one of the first in my group of friends to have a baby, I figured they could suck it up and enjoy themselves with food, fun, and laughter while finding out the gender of our baby with us.
Anyone who knows me will agree with me when I say that 1. I’m such an introvert who would rather hang out with a few friends rather than throw a huge party and 2. I’m very good at budgeting and don’t believe in spending crazy amounts of money on materialistic things. I’m an introverted minimalist. With that being said, I wanted my gender reveal party to be intimate, budget friendly but still fun (and Pinterest approved).
Thinking about having a gender reveal party? Here are the steps I took to create the perfect stress free gender reveal party on a budget.
- Select your guest list and send out invitations
Decide on if you’re planning on having a small or large gender reveal party. If you’re doing a gender reveal party on a budget, I’d suggest that you go for something smaller. My fiancé and I decided that we were going to keep the guest list limited to our closest friends. Since our guest list was small, it did help us stay within a reasonable budget that didn’t break the bank.
Choose how you’re going to invite guests. If you’re sending paper invites, make sure you give yourself enough time to mail out invitations. We opted for emailing free invitations through Evite . Their website has a ton of cute options for gender reveal invites and they also have a guest list manager which made it easy to manage the guest list.
- Pick budget friendly decorations
Since gender reveal parties are becoming extremely popular, it’s pretty easy to find decorations at different price points. We ended up purchasing most of our decorations at Party City as well as Amazon.com. We got this clever Oldwives Tales picture frame and pink and blue beads on Amazon.com.

We also got this awesome gender reveal party kit at Party City.
- Choose your food & drink menu
In order to save money and time slaving away over the stove, go for light refreshments and hors d’oeuvres such as chicken wings, quiche, meatballs, and chips. We were able to pop all of the hors d’oeuvres in the oven while we finished the final decorations. It saved us so much time rather than waking up super early to cook.
For drinks, we kept it pretty simple with canned drinks and bottled water. For alcoholic drinks, we served mimosas. I ended up mixing ginger ale with orange juice to create an alcohol free mimosa for myself.
Don’t forget the treats! We went to a local grocery store and ordered cupcakes with pink and blue icing. I know opinions may differ but I LOVE baked goods from grocery stores. It tastes so good and beats spending an arm and a leg at a fancy shop. We also purchased pink and blue rock candy off of Amazon.com for table decoration.

- Figure out how you’re going to do the reveal
Ah, the most important part. How could I forget? Some couples choose to find out the gender and keep it between the two of them until the reveal while other couples want to find out with the guests. Whatever you decide, make sure you let the Ultrasound Tech know before the ultrasound! We told the Ultrasound Tech that we wanted to find out the gender at the reveal so she wrote the gender on a piece of paper and put it in a sealed envelope to give to our friend.Next you need to decide how you want to do the reveal. You can easily find tons of gender reveal ideas on Pinterest. We ended up revealing the gender by opening up a bag of balloons that revealed pink balloons while our guests let off confetti poppers.
- Make sure you have games to play
Make sure you have party games to play to keep your guests entertained. We didn’t want to do the typical baby games since it was so cliché so we brought out normal party games to keep our friends laughing including Telestrations, Cards against Humanity and brought out Just Dance 2017 as the grand finale.Gender reveal parties are a great way to spend time with your closest friends and family members while sharing the excitement of finding out the gender of your bundle of joy. I had so much fun planning and hosting our reveal without spending a ton of money. If I could do it all again, I’d do it the exact same way.Want More?Download this life saving gender reveal party checklist to help you plan a stress-free party!
