Best Online Breastfeeding Classes for New Moms

Preparing for the birth of your baby normally includes completing your registry, packing your hospital bag and learning a ton about what to expect which includes breastfeeding classes.  While most moms aren’t inclined to taking in-person classes, especially with the crazy times we’re going through right now, a great alternative is taking online breastfeeding classes.

With online courses continuing to improve and becoming even more accessible, opting to take a breastfeeding class online is a great way to learn all you need to know about breastfeeding within the safety of your own home.

Best Online Breastfeeding Classes

There are so many online breastfeeding courses to choose from and all of my favorites are from Milkology. Milkology provides great free resources for breastfeeding and offers low cost online classes that you can do at home.

Milkology has three great classes to choose from depending on what you’re looking for. Here are the three classes that you can choose from.

The Ultimate Breastfeeding class

Who is it for: this course is great for new moms who are interested in learning all things breastfeeding. This is also good for moms who are looking for a little refresher.

The Ultimate Breastfeeding Class

What’s in the course curriculum: The Ultimate Breastfeeding class is broken down into three steps within 13 easy to watch lessons.

During step one, you’ll learn about the properties of breast milk and the benefits of breastfeeding for mom and baby. Step two goes through the breastfeeding process providing an understanding on lactation and mastering your milk supply.  Step 3 provides you with helpful techniques where you learn different latch positions as well as how to express and store milk. This course is also only 90 minutes.

Cost: This course costs $19.

The Ultimate Back to Work Pumping Class

Who is this for: This is for moms who might be nervous about transitioning back to work and would like to learn more about pumping. I also recommend this for moms who are interested in both breastfeeding and pumping. You’ll learn more about milk expression, transitioning your baby to a bottle and tips to ease your transition back to work.

The Ultimate Back to work Pumping Class

What’s in the curriculum: The Ultimate Back to Work Pumping Class is also broken down into three steps. Step one provides you with tips on picking the perfect breast pump and how to get your pump. Step two teaches you how to pump and store milk. Finally, step three helps you establish and protect your milk supply.

Cost: This course costs $19

The Ultimate Exclusive Pumping Class

Who is this for: This class is for moms who aren’t able to breastfeed or choose not to but still want to provide their baby with breast milk. Normally, you’ll find a course for moms who want to both pump and breastfeed but this is unique in the fact that it’s for moms who want to exclusively pump.

The ultimate exclusively pumping Class

What’s in the curriculum: Like the other Milkology courses, The Ultimate Exclusive Pumping Class breaks down the course in three steps. You’ll learn strategies to maximize your output using two simple strategies.

Step one walks you through selecting the pump that’s best for you as well as some great pumping related products.

In step two, it explains how to exclusively pump by helping you understand how to use your pump, how often and how long you’ll need to pump.

Step thee prepares you for success by discussing how to overcome barriers you may have while exclusively breastfeeding.

Cost: This course costs $19

Milkology Email Class

Who is this for: If you’re still not sure if you’re ready to open your pockets to pay for a class, Milkology also has a free class to help you get started.

What’s in the curriculum: This is an email class that will provide you with the secrets to success. You’ll receive a daily email for five days going over what to expect for breastfeeding, how to prepare while you’re pregnant and much more!

Online Breastfeeding Class Benefits

Just like any other course, taking a breastfeeding class online has plenty of benefits which includes my favorite two c’s: convenience and cost effectiveness.

Do it on your own time: taking a class online is super convenient because you can do it on your own time. I’m sure you’re busy trying to get everything together before the baby arrives and it can be hard to fit yet another thing on your schedule.

Unlike an in-person class, if you take an e-course on breastfeeding, you can do it anywhere and at any time.  If you’re a morning person like me, you may want to get up early to take a class before your day gets busy. If you’re a night owl, you can take the course at the end of the day.

Most courses are also programmed where you can take it on your computer or on your mobile device so you can view it on the go.

Re-watch it at any time: Breastfeeding is hard. If you’re a first time mom, I’m sorry to break it to you but breastfeeding can be challenging for many moms. It takes a lot of practice and patience which brings me to the second benefit of taking an online class. You can re-watch it at any time!

After having your baby, you may have additional questions or details that you may have missed the first time you took a class. If you take a breastfeeding class online, you can easily go back and re-watch parts of the course to refresh your knowledge. This is another reason why you might prefer an e-course vs. in-person. If you take an in-person class, especially BEFORE you have your baby, you may forget pieces of information and have nothing to go back to.

Less expensive than an in person class: this brings me to my second favorite C, cost effectiveness.  Online breastfeeding classes tend to cost less than in-person classes. If you think about it, when going to an in-person class, not only are you paying for the knowledge, you’re also paying a portion of the cost for the space where the class is, the cost of the instructor and also for transportation to get to the class.

Many online programs are able to eliminate these costs which gives you a big reduction on how much you will pay for a course. We already know that it can be expensive to prepare for a newborn so reducing any costs is extremely helpful.

Increase your confidence in breastfeeding:  Remember when I mentioned that breastfeeding can be hard? I’m not here to discourage you I just want to let you know that knowledge is power.  If breastfeeding provides a challenge for any reason, you want to be equipped with the tools and knowledge to confront these challenges with confidence. By taking an online breastfeeding class before you give birth, you’ll feel more confident and prepared once your baby is here.

Online Breastfeeding Support Groups

Now I know what you’re thinking. What about virtual breastfeeding support after I take my online class?  There are plenty of online breastfeeding support groups to choose from.

La Leche League International Breastfeeding Support Group has over 45,000 mothers supporting each other in their breastfeeding journey

The Kelly Mom Breastfeeding Support Facebook group provides a space where parents can interact for parenting and breastfeeding information.

Milky Mamas Breastfeeding Support Group is an extremely active group with over 120,000 moms. This group’s mission is to help new moms succeed in their breastfeeding journeys.

There are also a ton of online forums where moms who are going through the same challenges as you can provide each other with advice.

Three of the best breastfeeding boards are What to Expect Breastfeeding Forum, The Bump Breastfeeding Message Board and Baby Center’s Breastfeeding Support and Help forum.

You can go to any of these websites to find the specific board along with other breastfeeding forums on the website.

Breastfeeding Websites

If you’re looking for additional breastfeeding resources, my all-time favorite website is Kellymom.com. The Kelly Mom breastfeeding section is pure gold. If you have a breastfeeding question, they most likely have an article on it.

In addition to providing support on a local level, La Leche League International has a website with tons of resources. They also have a bi-monthly magazine, Breastfeeding Today, that provides accurate breastfeeding information to encourage breastfeeding families across the globe.

Wrapping it up

During these uncertain times, when we’re all looking for ways to get support virtually, there is help out there.  I highly recommend signing up for one of Milkology’s awesome breastfeeding classes. I guarantee you will feel confident and well-prepared for your special and unique breastfeeding journey.

There are also so many resources and support groups online that will make you feel welcomed and not feel alone.

P.S- if you’re also looking for the perfect virual baby registery, Amazon’s baby registry is such a great choice! You’ll be able to find everything that you need in one place.

Just by completing your amazon registry, you get a free welcome box with tons of cute gifts and samples.

You also get a discount on items you buy from your own registry. It’s great for friends and family members since they can purchase from your registry without leaving their house!
